Pride alone wasn’t the only problem this Corinthian church faced. There was fornication taking place and some were prideful about it. We don’t use the word fornication much today. We should, it packs a greater punch.
The word in the Greek is porneia. Do you recognize that word? This wasn’t just sexual immorality as some translations put it, this was illicit sexual intercourse. The word fornication encompasses adultery, homosexuality, lesbianism, intercourse with animals, etc. It comes from the root word to prostitute one’s body to the lust of another. It is not a mild word. Fornication was alive and well in the Corinth church.
But there was more! They were defrauding each other and taking each other to court. Marriages were falling apart. Men were not leading in their marriages. And, with all their sins and failings, they had become legalists. Prideful, unconfessed sin will always lead to legalism and judging others in an attempt to rationalize personal behavior.
