There is trouble in the Corinthian church! It all has to do with men being puffed up, that is, pride.
Pride in the church will cause contentions (heated dissensions). The church members were prideful over who baptized them or who was their spiritual mentor. Paul makes it clear that it is not about any man; Paul planted the church, Apollos watered it, but only God gave the increase. The planter and the waterer are one in Christ, God uses them both. Therefore there is no reason for the church members to take sides or to pit one man over another.
