How were Old Testament saints (before the death of Christ) saved?

Often it is said they were saved by looking forward to the death and resurruction of our Lord, just like we look back to His death and resurrection.  Yet in Luke 18:34, the disciples,

“Understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.”

Notice how salvation came to the house of Zacchaeus in Luke 19:9.  Should we rethink our phrasing of Old Testament saints’ salvation?

Read Luke 18:15 – 19:48

  1. how Does Heb 11 fit into this thought? It seems faith in God in each of their circumstances and lives is were they were focused.
    I hope this make sense.

    • Amen, salvation is by grace through faith. Yet, the OT saints could not have been saved by “looking forward to the death and resurrection of Jesus.” So, how can we better communicate how OT saints were saved? Should we just say, “they had faith in God?” ???
