Israel will face dire consequences for her sins.  Several indictments are levied against the nation due to constant sinning against God throughout her history:

  1. In Egypt: They did not get rid of their idols (disobedience against God’s specific command to do so).
  2. In the wilderness:  Day after day they refused to obey God’s laws.
  3. In Canaan: They had made it to the Promised Land, but still they persisted in blaspheming and betraying God.

They wanted to be like the nations around them.

Beloved, that may be one of the grave sins we fall into. We look at the world around us and want what they have. Small churches look at big churches and long to be like them. Large churches study the marketing methods of the world so they won’t repel people by just teaching the Bible. If we look really cool we will attract more people! We are not called to attract, we are called to go out (Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 1:8),

Individual Christians and local churches need to take heed to 1 John 2:15,

Do not love the world or the things of the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

The command for the church is to be wise in our actions (Ephesians 5:15-17),

See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

No consequence from God should ever take us by surprise.  Israel received warning after warning. All they needed to do was repent. God remains faithful and in spite of their terrible sins, God will oneday in the future, regather, and restore His people!
